Going into the 2009 College Football season, there were many expectations for an exciting year, and the season had many twist and turns that nobody were able to see coming. Some of those twists and turns included relatively unknown teams that came from nowhere to be in the Top 25, teams with high expectations who completely underperformed, one of the closest Heisman races in the 75 year history of the Heisman Trophy, and dramatic coaching changes that left many fans guessing.

After Week 2 of the season, the University of Houston emerged onto the Top 25 scene with two dominant victories over Northwestern State, 55-7, and No. 5 Oklahoma State, 45-35. The Cougars finished the season with a 10-4 record and ended a great season with a 47-20 heartbreaking lost to Air Force in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl.

Coming into the 2009 season Head Coach Pete Carroll and the Trojans of Southern California were predicted to achieve greatness once again. But in a game against the University of Washington in Week 3, those expectations came to a sudden halt when they were upset 16-13 and fell from No. 3 to No. 12 in the AP polls. That’s when their season really started to go downhill. They finished the regular season with an 8-4 record and failed to get their 7th straight Pacific-10 Conference title and finished a very disappointing 4th this year. But despite the poor season, the Trojans defeated the Boston College Eagles 24-13 in the Emerald Bowl.

On December 12th, 2009, the Heisman Trophy was presented to Mark Ingram the star running back of the Alabama Crimson Tide. He beat out Toby Gerhart from Stanford by receiving five more first place votes. Colt McCoy the quarterback from Texas finished in third place with 203 first place votes.

One of the coaching changes that no one saw coming was Brian Kelly of Cincinnati leaving right before their huge bowl game against Florida in the Sugar Bowl to become the new coach at Notre Dame. Two other major changes were Pete Carroll leaving USC to take up the head coaching position for the Seattle Seahawks, and Lane Kiffin leaving the Tennessee Volunteers to take over for Carroll at USC.

By JOHN HILLS

MLB: Mark McGwire- OMG, Mark McGwire was on steroids?? You’re telling me that the enormous man, with muscles the size of trees, who looked like the Incredible Hulk’s long lost brother didn’t look that way because of push-ups and vitamins? Oh come on. This is just about as surprising as Tim Lincecum being caught with marijuana(Just look at him!). McGwire was one of the most obvious steroid users, but he has continuously denied it, until his recent confession. Thanks for finally coming clean Mark. Too bad Jose Canseco did it for you about five years ago. Ouch, so much for looking out for your teammates.

UFC: Brock Lesnar- Keeping with the theme of gigantic human beings, here comes Brock Lesnar. For those of you who were fans of the WWE, or still are, you may recognize this name. This is the same freakishly large man who dominated what they call “wrestling”, but is really just a soap opera with a lot of fake fighting. But these days he’s moved on to a REAL sport. He is currently the Heavyweight champion in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and is one of the scariest men to ever fight in the organization. He stands 6′ 3″ and weighs a hefty 265 lbs. I feel sorry for anyone who has to fight this monster and I’m sure the people willing to do so are becoming fewer and fewer. A few words of advice to his next opponent; Bring ice!

NFL: Tony Romo-Ahhh it’s that time of year again. Winter is here, NFL playoffs are coming to a close, and we’ve just witnessed another horrible playoff performance by Tony Romo. His latest pitiful showing knocked the Cowboys out of the playoffs once again. The quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys has been one of the best in the NFL since he took over the starting job during the 2006 season. However, when the playoffs roll around, Romo just can’t seem to do anything right. From fumbles to interceptions, not to mention that botched field goal against the Seattle Seahawks back in 2006(that was just pathetic Tony), Romo is simply cursed in the playoffs. But I definitely know one person who is loving Romo’s latest failure: Jessica Simpson. Who’s the jinx now?

PGA: Tiger Woods- Oh Tiger. Where do I even begin? Should I start with the bizarre crash he had at 2:30 A.M. on the day after Thanksgiving? Man those fire hydrants and trees just jump right out in front of you don’t they? Or should I start with the over a dozen women who have had alleged affairs with Woods? It seems like he has more women than golf clubs these days. And you can’t forget about Tiger taking an indefinite leave from the PGA Tour. This is definitely bad news for the Tour. With its biggest star out for an undetermined amount of time, their ratings will surely be in the tank. But look on the bright side, some other golfers will finally get the chance to actually win a tournament. Too bad no one will be watching.

New semester, new classes! WUHS is offering several new classes for students this year. They include English 11 AP, Biology AP, AP Art History, and English 12 Honors. Our school offers English 11 AP to allow more students to earn college credits and elevate their GPA. It helps students by it focusing on writing skills that will help students in college. It also challenges students to read critically. The class teaches the students how rhetoric is used in non-fiction and how to apply it in their own writing.

“This class helps students in the future because they can learn valuable writing and reading strategies that could be used in college and later on in life,” English 11 AP Instructor Toshia Blunt said.

“I wanted to be in English 11 AP because I enjoy to write and I love to read. I like this class because it is something that I am really interested and Mrs. Blunt is a very fun teacher to have,” Junior Jasmine Hines said.

“English 11 AP will challenge me and will help my writing overall. I like this class because it is really willing to make me learn, which helps and it is challenging enough to be fun,” Savannah Nielsen said.

AP Biology was integrated for two reasons. The first was to expand our AP program and the second was to give our Health Institute students a challenging senior class. This class gives students the chance to earn college credits and expand their knowledge on their field. Students learn topic like genetics, evolution, plants, and cells in AP Biology.

“It helps students in their future because they may earn credits for college and learn about life,” AP Biology Stephanie Chavez says.

“I’m in AP Biology because I’m planning to start majoring in chemistry, need another science class, and AP= college credit. I like this class because I like doing experiments and learning about life,” said Bryan Chow.

“I joined AP Biology because I like biology and it looks good on a application. Biology AP challenges me and I also like labs,” Amber Aguilar said.

Art history is an AP class that will help students prepare for art history in college or possible get college credits if they pass the AP exam in May. Art history helps students recognize the history of us through the arts we have created. The class teaches what art is, art vocabulary, and art in the context of when it was created. This class helps the students tremendously because it teach them critical thinking skills and they learn about a subject that relates to almost every area of study.

“I joined the Art History class because I have always been really interested in art and it’s history. I like this class because the way it’s set up so we look at all the different pieces of art and discuses them. It’s very interesting,” Senior Nikki Markarian said.

“I chose to take this class because I don’t know a thing about the history of my talent and I need to know it to survive in my future career. I like this class because I am able to learn where, when, and how the history of art was built. I’m able to learn a wide range of art from many different resions of the world,” Money Sovannasack said.

Our school offers English 12 Honors to better prepare students who are interested in the health and science field for college and their career. This class teaches students how to communicate their research, lad results, or experiment results affective. This class helps the students organize and format their arguments or results in a professional and academic manner. This class will definitely help students in the future as they continue with an education that is focused on health and science. It is essential that they know how to communicate with their colleagues, bosses, or future patients.

Varsity Boys Basketball

The Panthers had a mediocre start to the season, with a record of 10-10 and third place trophies in both the Sanger and Corcoran Tournaments. In the off-season the Panthers worked hard on trying to play together and work on team ethic in order to compete this season.

“This year our goal is to win league and get ready to compete for a valley championship,” Head Coach Tony Petersen said.

Going into league, Sierra is looking to be their toughest competition. Junior Rance Johnson suggests that the young team should work on becoming a team more than anything.

“We should start to bond as team,” Johnson said. Johnson sets the example by coming out every night and practicing hard.

“Everyone follows when you work hard,” Rance Johnson said .

Senior Jose Rivas thinks they should go undefeated this season.

“The team is finally starting to come together,” Rivas said.

JV Boys Basketball

The JV Panthers had a record 7-4 coming into league with a great start to the season. Head Coach John Hetherington has been preparing the boys for the next level; Varsity. Winning isn’t everything at this level of play. It’s more about preparation.

“Varsity has a much higher priority of winning,” said Hetherington.

The Panthers went 3-0 in the Mendota tournament and were on a five game winning streak. They had a tough schedule that helped them prepare for coming into league. The Panthers believe that their biggest competition in league will be Kerman and Yosemite. Sophomore Dashown Fletcher hopes to go on into league undefeated. He has been working hard and giving 100% at every practice and games. The boys are hoping to accomplish a very successful league season.

“The team has a lot of potential,” said Head Coach Annie Taylor.

She has been seeing a lot of improvement throughout the pre-season and has very high expectations for her team this season. Taylor has her eyes set on Yosemite and Sierra as their toughest tests this year in league. Senior Mary Aphay has been practicing hard, working on plays and trying to have good practices in preparation for league.

As a leader, Aphay helps her teammates on anything they need help with and tries to work harder than the rest. Freshman Sha’Harrah Traylor has been practicing hard and trying to work as a team. As a freshman, Sha’Harrah Traylor has been putting in the extra effort to prove herself. If the team plays hard and plays together, Traylor is hoping for a League title for the Lady Panthers.

JV Girls Basketball

The Lady Panthers had a rough start during the pre-season, but they picked it up going into league. They won their first League game against the visiting Kerman Lions.

“Kerman always comes out and plays hard against us” Head Coach Angel Larios said.

Competing hard in every game and seeing improvement is what Coach Larios expects from his team this season. He has been working a lot on defense and offense and his press throughout the pre-season.

“Our goal is to win more games than last year,” said Junior Denise DeLaTorre.

DeLaTorre has been keeping a positive attitude and picking players up when she needs to.

Wrestling

Wrestling has returned this season with winning on their mind. The Panthers are 4-0 outside of league and 2-0 in league making them 6-0.

“My expectations are to be undefeated and be league champions,” Head Wrestling Coach Ryan Stockton said.

As the Panthers gear up for the season they keep a good attitude, especially when faced with their toughest competition, which is Kerman.

Senior David Rico has been wrestling all summer in preparation for this season. Ranked #1 in the valley and in Masters at 105’s, Rico is hoping to definitely be a League Champion this year.

Junior Christopher Gonzales, who transferred from North Sequoia rival Kerman, has been pushing himself through his pre-season of wrestling. As a good leader, Gonzales has been showing up to every practice and making others around him better. Gonzales is ranked #3 in Valley and #8 in Masters at 114’s.

Varsity Boys Soccer

The Varsity team had a very respectable record of 2-1-1 coming into league. They are expected to show hard work and dedication, which will result in a great league season.

In order to do that they have to work together as a team in practice and games.

Sophomore Manuel Zarate, who plays both forward and center midfielder, has been improving in practice, and giving 100% at all times. He hopes that he and his team will go undefeated in league this season. Zarate teaches his teammates to never give up and always do what they are supposed to do.

Junior Hector Saenz doesn’t want anymore losses or ties.

“We have to keep winning and in the end, win league,” Saenz said.

He believes that the team needs more leadership and communication on the field, but when it comes down to it, Saenz knows what needs to happen.

“Man, we gotta score,” Saenz said.

JV Boys Soccer

The JV Boys started off with a 2-2 record in league this season, but are hoping to have a great season.

“Its a tough league this year,” Coach Brian Miller said. “The boys should always play tough.”

The boys have been playing a lot of scrimmages with other teams and also have been practicing with the varsity team.

Freshman Rudolfo Vasquez trains and practices hard every time he steps on the field. He also gives advice and helps his teammates work as a team.

Freshman Uriel Espindola goes to every practice and works hard to the best of his ability. In order to be ready for games he shows 100% in practice.

“The way you practice is the way you play in the game,” Uriel Espindola said.

Also, Espindola shows good sportsmanship when he has the chance to be the captain at practice and makes sure to be a good leader for his team.

Varsity Girls Soccer

The Varsity Girls were 6-2 going into league this season. Coach Chandler West hopes for the best and hopes that his team plays as well as they can.

“We have played on a Club Team from October to November every Saturday, so that should get us prepared,” West said.

Senior Alexis Reyes has started at sweeper for every game. She has been conditioning non-stop and trying to improve all the time.

“Even when there is no practice or practice gets cancelled, I always call some friends up and go and work out with them,” Reyes said.

January 10th. The day before Washington Union went back to school. But only a few know it was also a day that will go down in television history. It is the day the Simpsons celebrated their 20 year anniversary, and to honor the shows success, a one hour special showed during Fox’s Sunday Animation Domination, documenting the Simpsons’ creation and success.

The one hour documentary was directed by Morgan Spurlock, known for his popular documentary Super Size Me, and his TV show 30 Days. The special was titled The Simpsons 20th Anniversary Special in 3D on Ice. This, however, was a joke in its self since only the last minute of the show featured any amount of third dimensional ice skating.

The Simpsons was created by Matt Groening, which he had been planning out since his childhood. All of the shows characters are named after streets in his hometown of Portland, Oregon. As for the main characters of the show, every character is based off of his family, first names included. The only exception was the character based on him, which he renamed Bart. Along with this, the character Krusty the Clown was based on a clown he was a fan of, named Rusty.

The Simpsons started when producer Jim Brooks decided to run cartoon shorts on a tv show called The Tracey Ullman Show. He chose Matt Greoning for a comic strip he had made, and after creating the Simpsons specifically for the show, it became popular. It was then that producers decided to run it’s own series about the Simpson family, and was given a green light by Fox to air 13 episodes.

The Simpson’s premiere was the highest rated show in the history of Fox, and even beat The Cosby Show, which was at the time the number one show in the country. Fans amassed not only in the U.S. but all over the world. It inspired many of the other cartoons people today say are more entertaining than The Simpsons, such as South Park and Family Guy. The Simpsons also spurred much controversy as it poked fun at many cultures and beliefs, as well as featuring a kid who backed talks his parents as one of the main characters.

However, today the show is considered far more timid than the other mentioned cartoons. With the release of a movie in 2007, and now finishing their 20th season, the Simpsons have gained many awards, including 26 Emmys, 26 Ammys, 6 Genesis wards, 6 Writers Guild of America awards, 4 People’s Choice awards, 2 British Comedy awards, 2 Kid’s Choice awards, a Golden Reel and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The show is speculated to be one of the most popular shows in television history.
